Day 3: Tweak the About Page for Your Blog

The about page is usually one of the first pages readers visit on a blog and therefore, the first place where readers create an impression of your personal brand. It certainly is one of the most-visited pages on all three of my blogs. That’s why it’s so important to keep it updated and interesting. At minimum, your about page should tell the reader who you are and what your blog is all about.

Today’s assignment

Write or tweak the about page for your blog. Your about page might include some or all of the following:

  • A welcome message
  • Your bio
  • A brief explanation on what your blog is about
  • A listing of your education, experience or other credentials related to your blog’s topic or niche
  • Links to some of your best posts that illustrate the essence of what your blog is about

Many of you wrote such great purpose statements, that you may also want to incorporate them into your about page!

You can title your about page simply “about” or perhaps one of the following:

  • About the author
  • About me
  • About (your name here)
  • About this blog
  • What this blog is about
  • Who is (your name here)?

Need more inspiration? Check out some pretty cool about pages from some of the most popular folks in the blogosphere:

Once you update your about page, post the link in the comments section below!

Note: Please tag your posts with “31bnb” to make them easier to share with us.

Those were good examples and I really liked Pioneer Woman’s pictures!

I am not sure if 3rd person is better or not. What do you guys think?

I am waiting to have a few more articles up for one of my post series before putting the links on the about page.

okay, i'm still behind, but here's my tweaked “about” page. i think it's WAY too long. http://www.amandamichellejones.com/about

i get the feeling i'm gonna perpetually be a day behind in this thing, lol…ish. but the awesome thing is that i got my blog imported over from wp.com to wp.org, installed headway, & added a buncha nice widgets. the site is still naked, but i'll fix that later this month.

About page tweaked and read for feedback! Incorporated some of the thoughts from my purpose statement (and the feedback I got from you guys about my purpose statement!), but I think it definitely still needs some work. Please let me know what you think!

  17. Grace says:

Thank you all so much for the feedback! I was thinking about adding more after reading some very enticing descriptions on other blogs linked here, but I think I'll stick with what I've got. And add post highlights as I post more. (Right now, the recent posts are pretty much all of the posts.)

  18. Marco says:

Thanks for your feedback. Still very much finding my voice, so the input is useful. I'll likely pick at the About page as I figure out what I want to focus on for visitors, and, ultimately, for me. For now, I'm pretty comfortable with the stream of consciousness online, as, for better or for worse, that's how I write (before a big edit, anyway!).

  19. I like your about page. It gives me hope with mine! :-)

  20. Mazarine says:

I think it would be stronger if you had a startling black and white self portrait on there, since it's your photography site.

  21. Mazarine says:

I like the shape of your about section. It's nifty. And you've got it parsed out in clean categories, with a link to your linkedin profile, which is good too.

  22. Mazarine says:

Your profile is short, but I guess I wanted more. What do you want people to take away from your profile? What's inspiring you to write? What are you selling, if anything? Who would get the most out of your blog? If you put your academic credentials and job first, I would have been more impressed.

  23. Mazarine says:

Your about section is kind of TLDR. I mean, it's reading like a stream of consciousness. I would like it better if you quickly say, “Here's who I am, here's what I want, here's how I can help you.” If you need to percolate those thoughts offline, do so, come back with a snappy description, and your about section will be the better for it.

  24. Mazarine says:

I like your about section, it's very snide.

One quibble-When you say “take a peak” I think you mean “take a peek”

    That is all.

    Mazarine

  25. Mazarine says:

    Thanks for the feedback!

  26. Akhila says:

I really like your about page! Very unique and intriguing. We seem to have a lot of similar interests, so it definitely makes me want to subscribe!

  27. Akhila says:

Your blog “about me” is so interesting, so different and very unique! Definitely intrigues me and makes me want to read more.

  28. Akhila says:

Thank you so much! I'm glad the changes I made were positive ones :) I really appreciate you taking a look at my blog!

  29. Naticaeno says:

Nicole, I checked out your about page and blog (thanks to Mademoiselle's compliment) and liked what I saw. Love the design.

  30. Naticaeno says:

Such a simple task, yet not so easy. I tweaked my about page and suspect more tweaks in upcoming days.

    http://myintertubeshome.wordpress.com/about/

  31. Miles says:

I see more tweaks on the horizon, especially as I select a few favorite links to add to my about page. This is my about page's current incarnation https://image001.wordpress.com/about/. I look forward to adding to it as I gain more experience in life and blogging.

  32. Jasminebellamy says:

I like the suggestion of adding favorite links to the about page so I'm going to work on that. I must admit that I was using my purpose statement and about page as one and the same. Technically my purpose statement was my first blog post in 2008 so I need to work on making that a more permanent place on the blog for new readers. Would love your feedback on my about page. http://www.chocolatechiponline.blogspot.com

  33. Grace says:

I love it. It's longer than most, but comes across as really genuine. The sample posts give a great idea of what the blog is really about. It definitely makes me want to follow your blog!

  34. Grace says:

Like GENaleX, my blog is only a couple weeks old. My About page is still pretty new, and a little different: http://gracecunningham.org/about

    Here it is:

    http://www.activelypassive.com/about/

Still will need some tweaking, but I think I'm OK with it for now.

  37. Mademoiselle says:

I love how succint yours is, and i really love how you were able to writie in third person without it seeming akward!

  38. GENaleX says:

I just created my blog, so it's still an infant. I tweaked the about me section to reflect my personality a bit more. GENERATIONaleX.blogspot.com

  39. Akhila says:

Made quite a few tweaks to my about page, and especially added some highlights of posts I liked. I have to keep going through this and editing it – and adding posts which I think are really the best out of all those I've written, but for now I think it'll do.
    http://akhilak.com/blog/about-2/
I'm also thinking of adding where else my blog has been featured around the internet, but I'm not sure about this yet..

also found my stats using blogger's info. for some reason I can't get google analytics to work on my page. I am 99% sure that it's user error.

  42. Danielle Hatchett says:

I made a few tweaks to mine. You can see it here: http://songsinthekeyoflife.net/whos-that-girl/ It works for now but will need more tweaks when I transition to the new blog – specifically some more bio information.

  43. Elle says:

Made a few tweaks to my About page…check it out http://elledub08.wordpress.com/about/

  44. Made all kinds of changes. Used parts of my purpose statement and voila, I have an about page that I'm happy with.

Made tweaks to my about me page. You can check it out here: http://www.artiatesiadeal.com/about-me/

  46. Mademoiselle says:

I think yours is strong, especially the “Street cred” section. You do a good job selling yourself and, in my opinion, what the blog will be about as a result of what you do. I would even consider putting that section before the “what can you learn here” section.

  47. Mademoiselle says:

    I really like yours!

  48. I made a few little tweaks…really this assignment had me at a lost.

So, I added in a few links to point readers to some other pages and posts. Hope the latter will keep people on the site for a while and encourage them to browse.

Any thoughts or comments are greatly appreciated…actually desperately needed

What about pictures? I have a few on my info page.

    http://businessforgoodnotevil.blogspot.com/

    About this Blog
This blog is about me. Sure, I'll talk a lot about politics, business, cover letter and resume tips, job hunting, business ethics, the non-profit sector, and a whole lot else. But ultimately, you'll learn about these things through my eyes, and as such, there are some biases you should know about.

First, I'm a college graduate, with a Bachelor's in Political Economy.

Second, I'm very interested in the non-profit sector, and in general think all businesses should run more like non-profits.

Third, I'm a capitalist. Sure, I have some strong ideas on how capitalism should be done differently, but I believe in the basic model, with some improvements.

Fourth, I'm a bit liberal. I don't identify as a Democrat, because I think that party has major problems, but I have a hard time taking Republicans seriously. Just a warning. Libertarians are something else; a little crazy, and I think many might be surprised at the degree to which their beliefs and Anarchism are one and the same, but I can respect a Libertarian as long as their belief system is internally cogent. I think its pretty difficult to be a Republican and not be a hypocrite; hence, the lack of respect. But I don't hate gay people, I'm OK with people pretty much doing their own thing.

Finally, I'm a Utilitarian. But don't assume that I agree with everything Mill or Bentham say. I feel strongly that the rightness or wrongness of an action is determined by the good or bad that it does to society as a whole. My entire morality is situational, based on what the impacts of individual circumstances are. This informs everything I do.

I sincerely hope that I get some disagreement about some of the things I write here, and that we can have some good discussion! Information is everything, and the more people talk about stuff and bring up more points of view, the better able we'll be to make informed decisions.

  51. Here it is:

    http://employedpanache.blogspot.com/p/creating-…

This assignment was like doing an interview with myself… I felt like I had to justify and support everything I said! I think it's because my weakest form of communication is written, so I really had to think about how to express my ideas and passion. Yes, a weak writer creates a blog… it's just so damn satisfying in the end! :)

  52. Hi Kim,

I made one by going to the big tab called Posting. This will pull up a new post page. There are smaller tabs called New Posts, Edit Posts, Edit Pages, and Comment Moderation. Click on Edit Pages, where you can create a New Page. I hope this helps! :)

  55. I have an “about me” page and an “about the blog” page. Both were written when I began the blog. I tweaked “about me” to update some info and include links to blog posts. Perhaps they should be combined in some way?
